Faneuil Hall Street Performer

This is not something you see everyday. He was standing on this pole about 15 feet in the air. There are four guys from the crowd keeping some ropes taught to keep him from crashing to the ground. He is keeping up a constant banter with the crowd while juggling various sharp objects. Gotta love a good street performer.

This is Nubble Light on Cape Neddick in southern Maine. It's no longer a working lighthouse but is maintained by Kittery Maine. The lighthouse actually sits on a small rocky island and the only way over is either by dingy or a cable to haul supplies across.

A little history lesson today. This is North Bridge in Concord, MA the site of the second battle of the American Revolution. The British had passed through Lexington to get here because of the ammunition being stored in the farm at this site. They got as far as this bridge before being driven back to Boston.

The Minuteman Statue in the background was erected in 1876 on the centennial of the battle.

I was running a series of test shots late yesterday and decided to include this in the Dailies.

Ok, this is a bit like backdating a check, but I like the picture and only took it a couple of days ago. This is within an old summer camp that had been used for years to bring kids in from Boston for the summer. It went up for sale a few years ago and to prevent development my town bought the whole thing. It's now open for recreation. This is the main lake at the center of the area. Amazingly clear and pollution free.

It's the time of year the daylillies are in full bloom everywhere. Just an example with some of the other flowers that are now in full bloom.

Light Painted Stream

Trying to get back into the swing of things here after long absence.

This is a small stream on the way to work. I liked the early light and by shooting RAW was able to retain a lot of the sky detail along with the darker areas.

First of my Daily Photos. We'll see how long I can keep it up. I'm trying to improve my skills and I think the only way to do that is shoot all the time with some sort of goal in mind. Right now I think my composition skills aren't very good. Just grabbing photos without thinking.

My wife's gardens are perfect subjects to start. Here is a Dogwood tree that is in peak bloom.

Liberty Bowl

Small history lesson. This is a picture taken in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston of the Liberty Bowl and the famous portrait of Paul Revere. The Liberty Bowl is considered one of the three great symbols of the American Revolution, the other two being the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution.

When the British Parliament passed the Townsend Act in 1767 (this is the act that taxed tea, among many other items) the American Colonies became incensed in that they were being taxed without any say in the matter. The Massachusetts House of Representatives passed a resolution declaring the Act 'unconstitutional' and authorized a letter to be circulated to the other Colonies demanding the Townsend Act be repealed. The British Royal Secretary of the Colonies demanded that the Royal Governor of Massachusetts go to the House and demand they rescind the resolution and letter otherwise he was to dissolve the Assembly. The House debated and declared no taxation without representation and then voted overwhelmingly not to rescind. This is considered the first act of defiance by the Colonies which eventually led to open conflict on April 19, 1776. The Sons of Liberty in Massachusetts commissioned Paul Revere to make this bowl commemorating the act of defiance and presented this bowl to the Massachusetts House soon after their vote.

Memorial Day Customs

Every year there is the Memorial Day Parade where the veterans and high school marching band move from memorial to memorial around the town common and pay respect. They start with the Revolutionary War and finish with Vietnam. At every point there is the shooting of guns with the requisite covering of the ears.

My shipment of puppies, kitten, and baby bunnies did not come in this week so I am forced to use wildlife instead. Canadian Geese live here pretty much year round now and this is mating season. There are babies pretty much everywhere and they grow surprisingly fast. In a few weeks these will be indistinguishable from their parents.

Found this dead tree in the woods early this morning. Was originally struck by the sunlight but as I zoomed in a little I liked the patterns from the growth. After cropping and expanding all this detail came out in the patterns in these small items.

A fortuitous shot at Cape Neddick in Maine. Saw this sailboat as I was walking up from the parking lot to the lighthouse at Nubble Rock. There was a good wind so I only had a few seconds to catch the shot before it crossed behind the rocks. With excellent advice from others I have been playing with the post processing on this for days.

Lady's Slipper

We have a large area of lakes and woods the town recently bought to preserve the character of the town. My family and I took a walk there the other day and found Lady's Slippers in bloom all over the area. These are protected in Massachusetts so you get as many pictures as you can.

1Hosta flowers with blue Hydrangea. Since this was taken on July 4, if you squint your eyes and give me a little poetic license you can make an argument that it has red, white, and blue.

Still Life with Fog....

Bad storms came through last night and we have had a front sitting on top of us for days trying to decide if we are to get the heat that's in the rest of the country or keep us cool. Tried to take advantage of some morning fog to see if I could get anything interesting. It's amazing how a picture can change as you crop, and play with the curves and then begin to see something in the image.

Been sitting on this for a few days and since I'm not happy with anything I've taken lately let's pull this one out of the hat.

The seagulls at Redondo Beach pier must hope they get paid for posing because they'll sit in perfect positions all day.

The Zen simplicity of just rocks....

Winter's coming. It was 24deg F at the house this morning so I thought I'd zoom in on some frost. It's amazing what patterns you can find as you start to crop.

My town is somewhat old (incorporated 1729) so this was the main graveyard for many years. There are a variety of gravestones approaching 300 years old. Here is a section at dusk where you can see some examples and hopefully a feeling for the sight.
